Are You Sure?
By Saai Syvendra ·
Decisions and our lives are intimate. Some of which are day-to-day while others are significant. Crushing this piece of paper is a decision. While making such decisions, have you ever asked yourself, the following three words? Are you sure? TOTD and my fellow decision-makers.
I am Saai Syvendra, the middle one of the three sons of my parents. Looking after three children is no ordinary task, especially three boys, but my father and mother did a splendid job. I was born on the 14th of March, a month after the all-time famous Valentine's day. Ever since that day, I have made multiple decisions. The earliest decision I could recall is the one I made during the Grade 1 Tamil Language paper.
I was seated in the far corner of the classroom with my legs shivering and lips trembling. That was the first time I did an exam. Towards the end of the paper, we had to fill in the blanks with the correct word for the given pictures. Two words sounded similar in Tamil. Vandu and Nandu, meaning beetle and crab. At that time, I wasn't sure which one went where. Like most people, my first thought was to guess the two answers alternatively. This was when those three words buzzed for the first time, "are you sure?"
After taking a moment, I wrote the same word for both the blanks. Through which I was sure that I would get one correct. I ended up getting a 98 for that paper. I'm still not sure what made me do that, but it was the beginning of the sequence of decisions. As time progressed, there were similar decisions to be made subsequently.
Choosing the stream for my Advanced Level Examination was a crucial decision I had to make in my school life. Most of the time, parents would suggest you do science, but in my case, it was different. I wanted to study in the Physical Science stream. My dad suggested that I follow the Arts stream. Don't get me wrong; it wasn't because the arts stream is easier in any way, it was because I talk a lot. As I was part of the team in a couple of sports and was involved in other extracurricular activities, people around me told me that it is hard to balance both. I followed my gut instinct and continued with the extracurricular activities whilst joining the Physical Science stream.
Questions were fired at me like bullets, everything being the same, "Are you sure? Are you sure? Are you sure?" I have watched plenty of Bollywood films, dodging those bullets was a piece of cake. Even if those bullets did hit me, I had the confidence to take those out and throw them away. At that point, I believed my decision was correct and started working to make it a reality. Today, I am happy that I have no regret in that decision.
There is no Ctrl+Z in our life. Before making decisions such as crushing this paper, ask yourself those three words. Decisions are irreversible, just as you can't bring this paper back to its original form. It is a permanent effect. Take your time, have confidence and make those wise decisions. Remember to ask yourself those three words, "Are you sure?"
