Newton's Fourth Law

By Saai Syvendra ·

I have a good news and a bad news. The bad news is that you are going to be learning Newton’s laws, again. The good news is that this so called smart Saai is going to be your teacher.

Contest Master, and my fellow students, let us start off with the first law. If you want to become the world champion of public speaking or a district champion, you can’t sit and wait. You will have to compete at the club. Move from club to area, move from area to division and keep moving forward. Issue is, most of us like to sit and wait, including the so called smart Saai. Hard to digest, I know I know. But then there is this external force who pushes you to start moving. Be it a club member, your mentor or even your President, who you can’t say no to. Now that you started competing, you will face another external force, our beloved judges. If they decide your journey of moving has to come to a halt, it will come to a halt. Once again, you can’t say no. That's it, Newton's first law. Just like your competition journey starting to move and coming to a halt, an object at rest will start to move, or an object moving will come to rest, when there is an external force, it can’t say no.

For the second law, let me take you to my home. This so called Smart Saai, has also got low marks. That too for maths. Hard to digest, I know I know. But when my marks decreases, something else increases. Do you know what it is? The speed of my fathers belt. Chatas, Pataas. That too back there. Hard to bare, And if I wanted to reduce the speed of the belt, I had to increase my marks, and so I did. That's why I’m speaking to you today about Newton’s laws, if not I would have had in laws by now. That's it, Newton’s second law. Just like when the marks were low, the speed of my dad’s belt was high, when the mass of an object is low, the acceleration of the object is high. When the mass is high, the acceleration is low, for a constant force.

For the third law, let me take you to a love story. Normally, people take there dogs for a walk in the beach. But my dog Tommy, takes me for a walk in the beach. Cause this so called Smart Saai is also very lazy. Hard to digest, I know I know. On one of these walks, as the sun began to rise and the fog disappear, something—or should I say, someone—caught my eye.

Her body shimmered in the sunlight, her eyes full of happiness, and her smile… No matter how smart you think you are, you'd get lost in it... Beside me, Tommy froze. Without a warning, he bolted like Usain Bolt, pulling me along the beach. Tommy was desperate to reach her, a fluffy cute cocker spaniel. And I was desperate to keep it out of my mouth.. Fff… No no, not bad words, the disgusting beach sand. That's it, Newton’s third Law. The action of Tommy falling in love, had a reaction of me falling on the beach. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

How many of you remember that Newton never had a fourth law, a show of hands. Sha, seems like all of you have paid attention to your grade 10 science teacher. Hard to digest, I know I know. (OR: Seems like none of you have paid attention to your grade 10 science teacher. Hard to digest, not at all) So what is this fourth law? It is an addition that this so called Smart Saai came up with. You are probably thinking how can this fellow be qualified to add to the great Newton’s Laws? Let me give you two reasons. Reason number one; with all due respect, Sir Isaac Newton was never in class, he was napping under a tree, waiting for a fruit to fall. On the other hand, this so called Smart Saai was in class every single day, five days a week, seated on the first row, listening to the not so smart teacher and taking down notes. Doesn't that make me eligible? Reason number two; because I was in class, I understood that our education system prioritizes memorisation over understanding, which was never the case during Sir Newton’s time.

The fourth law. “Memorised knowledge with no understanding, is like wearing specs with no lens, you might look smart but there is no use”. When I talk about memorisation, first thought you would have got is studies and exams. But you do know that we all have unique knowledge in our memory that we did not memorise. For example, I have a friend who can tell how much Sanga scored at a match that happened decades ago. Another friend who can look at a picture of Sha Rukh Khan and tell which film it was from, after commenting on how awesome he looks. Do you think either of them memorised any of it? Mmm hmmm. They had their own unique way of understanding it. And all of us do have a way, Its about finding it. My way is to link knowledge with stories. Competing at Toastamsters; first law. Dad’s Chataas Pataas; second law. Dog being walked; third law. Specs with no lens, fourth law.
